what is android ROM

so many android fans keep asking what is android ROM.so many of us have been hearing about android rom but don't know what it is and what it is used for.well, to my own understanding, android rom is simply a version of android OS that is been created by an individual or company, organization to suite their own purpose of their smart phone.it could be an updated version or lower version of an android OS made for a specific phone or device that is created by individual or company to suite their purpose of making use of the android phone.is you still don't understand, then i will explain it in details on what android ROM is all about and it's usefulness.

android OS is a free open source which any body can use to make their own smart phone running android OS.any company or individual can download the OS and modify, change, edit it to their taste and use it to make their own smart phone or use for existing ones.

android OS comes in different version, ranging from froyo 2.1, ginger bread 2.3, icescream sandwitch 4.0, jelly beans 4.1 etc for different phone manufacturers like sansung, htc, techno, Sony experia etc.

so in this case, one can not just download the open source android OS of any version and use it to update their smart phone.it must be programed to be compatible with a particular phone model, else, you may end up damaging it.so this is where a rom comes in to play.

you will have to look for a ROM that is made for your type of android phone, e.g Samsung galaxy s3 ROM can not be used on Sony experia cause it is not programed for it and hence not compatible with it.

so therefore, you can either download an older version or higher version of a ROM for your phone type made by individual developers.

if your phone manufacturer has not come up with an android os update through OTA for your phone type, you may see some one who might have developed and modify an updated android OS version to for your phone type which you can test run on your device but note that some functions may not work properly since its not from the direct manufacturer of the phone.

some of the benefit of installing new rom is that it could serve as an update for your phone e.g, may be your phone is running android OS version 2.3, you may update it to 4.0 if any one has developed such version for your phone model.also you can flash new ROM to solve bootloop or bricked, damaged phone.you can use a ROM to replace the default OS for your phone if it has been corrupted and no backup was made.that's all, ENJOY.
